Cardiac Device Nurse, RN

Location: Mercy Hospital – Mercy (Coon Rapids, MN) & Unity (Fridley, MN) campuses
Job Status/Hours: Full time, 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)

Summary of Duties:

Work harmoniously amongst an interdisciplinary, autonomous team of technical device experts to manage holistic ambulatory care of patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) including pacemakers (PPMs), implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and implantable loop recorders (ILRs). Support a group of five electrophysiologists (EPs) and five electrophysiology advanced practice providers (EP APPs) by making informed clinical decisions within the RN scope of practice and as directed by established policies to manage the care and follow-up of CIEDs.

Primary location of position is Mercy Hospital – Mercy (Coon Rapids, MN) & Unity (Fridley, MN) campuses. Other locations include Buffalo Heart Center (Buffalo, MN) and Allina Health Elk River Clinic (Elk River, MN). Potential for occasional hybrid/remote work.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate critical, independent thinking and decision making within RN scope of practice
  • Demonstrate ability to work with confidential and controlled information including patient records, physician DEA numbers and prescriptions
  • Verify and update medication lists
  • Provide detailed plan of care including explanations, educational resources regarding orders, medications, and tests/procedures
  • Comprehend and clearly explain to patients/families
    • Basic anatomy and physiology of the heart
    • Cardiac electrophysiology and rhythm interpretation
    • Indications for implantation of PPMs, ICDs, biventricular devices, and ILRs
    • CIED components, purpose, function, programming, algorithms, and therapies
    • Remote CIED follow-up routine, monitor functions, and purpose
  • Conduct device interrogation, performing lead testing, data interpretation, and system evaluation of devices from various manufacturers
  • Recognize normal and abnormal device function
  • Determine the need for device reprogramming, and do so in coordination with policies, provider and device representative direction
  • Evaluate remote transmissions of CIEDs
  • Evaluate and appropriately classify cardiac arrhythmias
  • Assess effectiveness of prescribed therapy. Address inappropriate detection, therapy, or therapy failure with EP physician in a timely manner
  • Process and triage remote alerts
  • Troubleshoot complex device and lead related issues
  • Perform quality thorough, yet concise documentation and collaborate with providers as necessary
  • Triage symptom phone calls
  • Perform wound checks and recognize complications including hematoma and infection. Coordinate with EP MD/APP to determine plan of care
  • Provide timely feedback of cardiac device diagnostic information to appropriate providers
  • Assess patients’ questions and concerns and refer as appropriate
  • Determine and coordinate clinic/remote follow-up as indicated by device evaluations, established policies, and physician direction
  • Ensures correct billing and coding of device checks
  • Assist with clinic research trials
  • Assist with AV optimization in coordination with EKGs
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Current Minnesota nursing license
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Current BLS & ACLS certifications
  • Five to seven years of RN experience
  • At least two years of recent experience in device clinic setting or any of the following:
    • Telemetry
    • Emergency Room
    • Intensive Care Unit
    • Post Anesthesia Care Unit
    • Electrophysiology Lab
  • Understand basic anatomy/physiology of the heart
  • Knowledge of advanced medical and cardiac terminology
  • Advanced ECG rhythm interpretation
  • Ability to verbalize and demonstrate knowledge of PPM and ICD systems, system analysis, programming and troubleshooting principles
  • Perform clinical assessments, planning, interventions, and evaluations
  • Basic computer knowledge required. Excellian/Epic experience strongly desired
