Heart Rhythm Device Clinic

Heart rhythm devices include permanent pacemakers, implantable defibrillators (ICD), and loop recorders.  These devices are implanted into patients to diagnose or treat abnormal heart rhythms and manage congestive heart failure.

The MHVI Device Clinic performs more than 11,000 evaluations of these devices each year. We help patients adjust to life with these devices and ensure patients are receiving all the benefits they have to offer. In addition, we partner closely with other cardiologists, primary care physicians, and advance practice providers to make sure medication, fitness, and treatment plans work together with pacemakers and defibrillators to optimize our patients’ health.

Our heart rhythm physicians, nurses, and technicians perform device testing and patient follow-up at our office sites in Coon Rapids, Fridley, and Buffalo.  We also monitor patients’ devices remotely through use of the internet, cellular connectivity, and conventional telephone landlines.

Meet our Device Team

The MHVI Device Team is comprised of 2 device technicians and 6 board-certified device nurses, as well as a cardiac monitor specialist, and a device assistant.  Our technicians have backgrounds in exercise physiology, electrophysiology, technology, and cardiac rhythm interpretation, and our nurses have backgrounds in cardiology, electrophysiology, critical care, and telemetry.  With extensive training and experience in cardiac rhythm device management, our team has a combined 30+ years of experience in cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) optimization and remote device monitoring.  Many of our staff are members of the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), the leading organization for heart rhythm management, which drives our clinic’s policies and protocols for the longitudinal care of CIEDs.  We work closely with providers to optimize CIED parameters to fit your individual health care needs.  Additionally, our cardiac monitor specialist has vast knowledge of wearable cardiac monitors for the purpose of data collection and diagnostics.  The day-to-day function of our clinic is supported by our device assistant, who also promotes follow-up adherence and ensures remote monitoring connectivity.  The MHVI device team has built our reputation on providing holistic, evidence-based, and patient-centered care to all our patients requiring in-clinic device interrogations and remote monitoring services.

MHVI Device Clinic Services

Our team not only ensures ongoing proper function of your CIED, but also completes individualized customization of the CIED parameters as your personal needs change over time.  This is achieved through longitudinal monitoring of your device with both in-office and remote appointments.  We perform manual tests on these devices in the clinic setting, and evaluate data collected automatically through a convenient, home-based monitoring system.  After interpreting your device reports, we work closely with your cardiology providers to make recommendations based on the available data.  We keep you apprised of your device status through various channels of communication as appropriate, including letters, telephone calls, and in person.  We provide extensive information about your CIED purpose, function, and follow-up routine at the point of establishment with our clinic.  Ongoing, tailored education is delivered throughout subsequent appointments, taking into account your technological skills and preferred method of learning.
